Schuylkill County VISION in partnership with the Borough of Shenandoah is a 2023 Safe Routes to Parks Pennsylvania Activating Communities grantee! The Safe Routes Partnership works with hundreds of partners throughout the country to create neighborhoods where streets, schools, and public spaces invite walking, bicycling, physical activity, and play. Safe Routes to School initiatives spark healthy change in communities, improving streets, and increasing opportunities for physical activity.

VISION and Shenandoah are working closely with Safe Routes Partnership staff to proactively engage community members in the process of assessing park access, putting together an action plan to address barriers, and begin implementing that plan.

Our first step is gathering information from Shenandoah residents about their park use, how they get to them, and how the conditions along existing community connectors (streets & sidewalks) impact their park use.

Residents are invited to an Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, August 16,  between 5 pm and 7 pm at Vine Street Park in Shenandoah to share their thoughts while enjoying a cup of ice cream. Mandy Fitzpatrick, VISION Executive Director will be present to answer questions and collect community feedback.

"We are excited that Shenandoah was one of the communities selected for this competitive grant. Improving the walkability and safety of our community goes hand in hand with Downtown Shenandoah, Inc.'s revitalization efforts," said Susan Williams, Executive Director of DSI. "Additionally, as a VISION board member, I am certain that with Mandy spearheading this action plan, the outcomes will be impressive for everyone involved." Susan also encourages everyone who lives in Shenandoah to stop by the ice cream social and get involved. "This is your community and this is an opportunity to help make it better!"
